Decentralized Trust Models for Secure Identity Verification in Distributed Systems
Abstract
The increasing prevalence of distributed systems, including blockchain networks, peer-to-peer platforms, and Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems, has heightened the need for robust, scalable, and secure identity verification mechanisms. Traditional centralized identity management models are prone to single points of failure, privacy breaches, and trust bottlenecks, making them unsuitable for modern decentralized architectures. This paper explores decentralized trust models that leverage distributed consensus, cryptographic primitives, and reputation-based mechanisms for secure identity verification. The proposed models allow nodes in distributed networks to establish and evaluate trust autonomously, ensuring reliable authentication while preserving user privacy. Key techniques include blockchain-based identity ledgers, self-sovereign identity (SSI) frameworks, and adaptive reputation scoring, which collectively mitigate identity fraud, Sybil attacks, and unauthorized access. The paper presents a detailed analysis of these models’ effectiveness, scalability, and security under various threat scenarios. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that decentralized trust models can achieve comparable or superior security guarantees relative to centralized systems while eliminating single points of failure. Furthermore, adaptive trust evaluation mechanisms improve resilience against malicious actors and dynamically evolving network conditions. This study highlights the potential of decentralized identity verification frameworks as foundational components for secure, scalable, and privacy-preserving distributed systems
