Designing Resilient Control Planes for Autonomous Enterprise Networks
Abstract
Distributed control planes are becoming quite popular in autonomous enterprise networks to understand intent, program configuration, reconcile network state, and act correctly using a heterogeneous infrastructure. Loss in these control services can, therefore, reinforce localized losses and introduce a spotty condition or slowness of the recovery of the network in a significant number of areas. This study suggests autonomous network control plane architecture based on resilience that differentiates the availability of management, durability of intent, continuity of reconciliation, and rectitude of external actions. The proposed design integrates failure-domain isolation, replicated-state, quorum-based coordination, stateless service replication, limited-capacity work queues, degraded operation modes, and continuously validated recovery processes. Network splits, availability of stale information, high latency, and unreliable behavior of devices are considered to be a natural phenomenon allowed under stringent protocols with buffers rather than an unprecedented phenomenon. Its resilience is measured, in line with service-level goals and fault-injection environments, and the measurements of accepted work, control-plane progress, loss of state, failover time, recovery reliability, and state preservation invariants are measured. It is impregnated with the manufacture of safety but not availability in the setting-up of the authoritative state whereby making of actions by parts in conflict is unreachable in which they can make their own. The ensuing architecture presents a sound basis to plausible independent networking through featuring regulated autonomy, impressive coordination, failure-containment and recoverable recovery behavior of distributed enterprise settings
